NACC Receives Outstanding Audit for 2005-2006

Northeast Alabama Community College (NACC) has received an outstanding audit for the college’s most recently review period – budget year 2005-2006. The Alabama Department of Examiners of Public Accounts conducted this audit.

The Examiners of Public Accounts do annual audits of public colleges and other public entities in the state. The Examiners’ report determined that NACC was in compliance on the college’s internal control over financial reporting, internal control over major programs, financial statement findings, and federal awards findings and questioned costs. The audit revealed no material weaknesses in financial statements or federal awards, including financial aid. The Examiners’ review was unqualified, meaning that all auditing standards were met.

“We are very pleased with the findings of this audit,” stated Dr. David Campbell, President of NACC. “Of course, our charge is to handle and spend our finances by the guidelines of appropriate state and federal laws, and by the policies of the Alabama State Board of Education. This audit tells us that we are doing what we should be doing.”

Campbell noted that the college has become much more complex in recent years, due to the addition of federal programs, such as Adult Basic Education. The college also has begun a federally-sponsored student loan program and added new programs of studies. Also, NACC is currently completing a major building project on campus. This project includes the construction of the 55,000-square-foot Health Education and Technology Center and a new campus road that reroutes traffic around the perimeter of NACC. Cosmetology centers also have been added to the college’s curriculum at Rainsville and Scottsboro.

There are approximately three hundred employees at the college and student enrollment this fall is at its highest level in more than thirty years. With some registration time still remaining, more than 2,500 students already have enrolled at Northeast for credit courses for the Fall Semester.

“We especially thank our Business Office, under the direction of Dean Larry Guffey, for the excellent work in their making certain that all audit guidelines are in place and are followed. Our Financial Aid, Bookstore, Admissions, and Human Resources offices do a great job following these guidelines as well. Receiving an outstanding report of this nature is a team effort, and certainly faculty and staff play a major role in achieving the standards set by the Examiners of Public Accounts.”

Campbell noted that the Business Office personnel consist of Larry Guffey, Dean of Administrative Services; Susan Hancock, Assistant to the Dean of Administrative Services/Accountant; Linda Cunningham, Payroll Clerk; Linda Guffey, Purchasing Coordinator and Business Office Secretary; Lenoyette Beam, Cashier/Business Office Secretary; and Kathy Gledhill, Receptionist/Inventory Clerk/Switchboard Operator. Leisa Bunch also serves as an Accounting Assistant for the Adult Basic Education program at NACC and works closely with the Business Office staff.
