College Receives ARC Grant
Northeast Alabama Community College (NACC)
has received a $179,957 matching grant from the Appalachian
Regional Commission (ARC), for the purchase of medical
technology for programs in the college’s new Health Education
and Technology Center. The technology equipment will be used to
train health care professionals in DeKalb, Cherokee, and Jackson
counties.
“We are very pleased to receive this
funding,” stated Dr. David Campbell, NACC President. “It will
permit us to have the best equipment available for our faculty
to use in training students. This equipment will be used in our
nursing, medical assisting, emergency medical services, and
paramedic programs.” The equipment to be purchased with the
funds includes hospital beds, medication carts, wheelchairs,
intramuscular injection simulators, examination tables, an
ambulance patient simulator, and a fully equipped and functional
ambulance.
Alabama Governor Bob Riley selected and
recommended the funding project to the ARC, and NACC officials
recently were notified that the ARC had approved and authorized
funding for the project. “We especially would like to thank
Governor Riley, Mrs. Bonnie Durham (Alabama ARC Director), and
Mr. Bob Culver (TARCOG Director) for their support, help, and
assistance in obtaining this funding,” Campbell stated. “Alabama
State Senator Lowell Barron, through state economic development
funds, also helped us secure a substantial portion of the
funding for the facilities in which this equipment will be
used.” At NACC, Dr. Joe Burke (Vice President/Dean of
Instruction) served as project director for the grant proposal,
aided by Nancy Griggs (Administrative Assistant in Workforce
Development).
NACC’s state-of-the-art Health Education
and Technology Center is nearing completion. In addition to
health-related programs, the facility will house the Alabama
Technology Network, a job skills training center, and academic
classrooms, and a teleconference center. The college has
established a partnership with Wallace State Community College
at Hanceville to provide a program in radiology at Northeast
through the teleconference network. NACC officials also plan to
use the facility to conduct workshops and presentations for the
local community on health-related issues. College officials note
that in determining the expansion of facilities at NACC that the
needs of the local community were given first priority. As a
result, the college focused on providing training in health care
and job training services.
