Northeast Literary Magazine and Billboard Win Awards

Northeast Alabama Community College recently was notified that it is the recipient of two awards in the Twenty-third Annual Admissions Advertising Awards competition by the National Newspaper of Admissions Marketing—Admissions Marketing Report.

The Aurora literary magazine received a Bronze Award in the category of Publication/Internal Group 2: School with 2,000-4,999 students. “The literary magazine at NACC is so much more than just a forum for our students, for it also serves as a recruiting tool,” said Reeves. The literary magazine is published annually by the Epsilon Alpha Chapter of Sigma Kappa Delta and the English and Fine Arts Department of NACC. “Through the writing competition we sponsor for area middle and high schools, we are able to reach out to potential students and offer those ‘budding’ authors a chance to see their work in print. The Aurora has truly been a labor of love and continues to reflect the amazing work being done by Alabama community colleges.” Other winners in this category included Texas A & M University, University of the Sciences in Philadelphia, Villa Julie College in Maryland, Central Lakes College in Minnesota, and University of South Carolina -Aiken.

Also a winner was one of the College’s new billboards entitled “Your future begins here!” which won an award of Merit in the category of Outdoor Transit/Billboard Group 2: School with 2,000 – 4,999 students. “This billboard was part of our marketing efforts to introduce the college’s newly redesigned logo/seal,” said Debra Barrentine, Director of Promotions Marketing for NACC. “We are very pleased with the outcome of our new campaign and that the AMR recognized our efforts.” Other winners in this category included Lourdes College in Ohio, Union University in Tennessee, Waynesburg University in Pennsylvania, Gardner-Webb University in North Carolina, and Northeast Iowa Community College.

The Admissions Advertising Awards is the largest education advertising awards competition in the country. This year, two thousand entries were received from more than one thousand colleges, universities and secondary schools from all fifty states and several foreign countries. Judges for the Admissions Advertising Awards consisted of a national panel of admissions’ marketers, advertising creative directors, marketing and advertising professionals and the editorial board of Admissions Marketing Report. The Admissions Marketing Report is the nation’s leading marketing publication for higher education. The monthly publication is in its twenty-third year and is read each by thousands of admissions marketers at colleges and universities throughout the country.

A complete listing of winners in all categories can be found at the website hmrpublicationsgroup.com. Northeast was the only two year community college from Alabama to win one of these coveted awards.

“We are very pleased that Northeast has won this national recognition,” said Dr. David Campbell, President of NACC. “Aurora, our literary magazine is just outstanding. Mrs. Joan Reeves and her staff do an excellent job with this publication. And letting people know about Northeast and what is available here is an extremely important function of the College. Mrs. Debra Barrentine does an excellent job in creating our slogans and getting our billboards designed. These awards show the quality of our staff’s work.”
