College Publications Win ACSPRA Awards
Northeast Alabama Community College received awards at the
Alabama Community College System Public Relations Association (ACSPRA)
2007 Summer Conference held recently at Point Clear. During the
conference, the Pyramid Awards ceremony recognized two-year
college marketing items created and used during the 2006 year.
Winners received either a Pyramid Award or Certificates of
Achievement or Merit.
The Yearbook Staff won the top Pyramid Award in the Student
Publications category for the Backroads Yearbook 2006,
“Remembering 40 Years of Excellence,” sponsored by Sheila Akins,
who is now retired from NACC. This is the 32nd volume of
Backroads. The yearbook is prepared annually by students
participating in the Mass Communications classes at NACC.
Carolyn Jones, current yearbook sponsor, accepted the award on
behalf of Akins and the 2006 yearbook staff.
Sigma Kappa Delta won an Award of Achievement in the Student
Publications category for the Aurora Magazine 2006,
sponsored by Joan Reeves. This publication includes original art
and written works by NACC students as well as area high school
and middle school writing competition winners. “The publication
of Aurora continues to provide NACC students with a venue
for their creative talents, and the recognition the magazine
receives is a testament to the college’s exceptional student
body and faculty,” said Reeves. Aurora is published
annually by the Epsilon Alpha Chapter of Sigma Kappa Delta and
the English and Fine Arts Department at NACC.
The NACC Website won an Award of Merit in the category of
Websites. The college website was redesigned in 2006 by a team
consisting of staff members Judith Lea, Lynde Mann, Regan
McClung, Angie Stewart, and webmaster Marilyn King Reece. “These
team members literally built the site from the ground up, from
menu structure to color scheme,” Reece said. “The redesign could
not have happened without their many talents and months of hard
work. Thanks also goes to Sam Dobbs for his technical expertise
and server administration.” Over a thousand visitors see the
website daily. Besides academic information about programs of
study, the site has an events calendar, the college catalog,
several photo galleries, contact information, and a links page
featuring local northeast Alabama attractions. It also hosts
portals for online courses and for NOAH (Northeast Online
Account Host) which gives faculty and students secure access to
their e-mail, grades, and other college business.
“Northeast personnel really won some top awards and we are very
pleased for these accomplishments,” stated Dr. David Campbell,
NACC President. “Keeping the public informed about what is
happening at Northeast is very important to us. There are many
activities going on here at the college, and we want the public
and our students to have the opportunity to take full advantage
of them.”
Debra Barrentine, Director of Promotions and Marketing at NACC,
attended the three-day ACSPRA conference. Susan Kirtland,
President of Propeller Communications of Desert Hills, Arizona
and Darryl Mattox, Agency Director/Partner of Gragg Advertising
of Kansas City, Missouri, were the featured presenters.
Barrentine served as president of ACSPRA in 2003-04.
The mission of ACSPRA is to enhance the image, strengthen and
promote awareness and public perception of the Alabama College
System.
