NACC Personnel Present at NADE
The National Association of Developmental Education (NADE) hosts
an annual conference to bring together developmental educators
from across the nation to share new methodologies and best
practices that have produced student success at their
institutions. This year’s conference was held February 27- March
2, 2008, at the Marriott, Copley Place in Boston. The theme was
Developmental Education, The New Revolution which focused on
addressing the academic as well as the affective needs of the
developmental student. Since Boston’s history has been rich in
revolutionary ideas, this was the perfect location. After all,
one could almost “picture Paul Revere furiously riding through
the streets of [this] fair city to the cries of “Prepare!
Advance! Excel”!
It was indeed an honor for Northeast
Alabama Community College to be selected to present nationally
at the national NADE Conference. Presenters from Northeast were
Shirley Buttram, Developmental Studies Coordinator; Sharon
Totten, Math Instructor; and Joan Reeves, English and Fine Arts
Division Director and Student Activities Director. Their
presentation was titled “A Revolutionary Approach in
Developmental Education: A Learning Community Initiative.” This
project provided a revolutionary approach to learning that
incorporated the academic and affective methodology, which has
been proven to equip the majority of learning community
participants with the necessary skills to attain academic
success.
The attendees welcomed the methodology and
best practices that presenters shared with them about The
Mustang Learning Community, so they could take the methodology
and employ it at their own campuses. Overall, the presentation
was well received by the attendees, who provided positive
feedback and were very complimentary about the effectiveness and
usefulness of the presentation.
Reeves,
Totten, and Buttram had previously presented to the state NADE
chapter (ALADE) in November 2007, at Mobile, Alabama, where they
also had received excellent evaluations. For more information,
