NACC's 2008 Graduation Ceremony Largest Ever

An audience of more than 2,000 people recently watched the largest graduating class ever at Northeast Alabama Community College receive their diplomas and heard United States Congressman Robert Aderholt deliver the commencement address. “This was a very exciting and rewarding evening for us,” stated Dr. David Campbell, NACC President. “Due to the size of the graduating class, we moved our graduation ceremony off-campus for the first time and held it at the DeKalb County Schools Coliseum in Rainsville. This permitted more of the graduates’ family members and friends to attend this celebration.” A total of 197 students received associate diplomas at the ceremony. Students were shown on a large screen monitor as they walked across the stage to receive their diplomas.

Congressman Aderholt, who represents the 4th District, thanked the families of the graduates for the support they had given in helping get their family member to the graduation milestone. He also advised students to act ethically in all that they did and to treat others as they themselves would be like to be treated. Others receiving special recognition at the ceremony were Dr. Daphne Huntley, chosen as the Dr. Charles M. Pendley Founders’ Chair Award Recipient as the college’s most outstanding teacher for the year; Matthew Hubbard, the President’s Cup recipient as the most outstanding student for 2007-2008; Austin Crowe and Matthew Hubbard, chosen as the college’s All-Alabama Academic Team members. A diploma and recognition was also given posthumously to the family of Deborah Stevenson, a member of the class who died as a result of an automobile accident in December of 2007.

“Graduation is the key event that we have at Northeast,” Campbell stated. “Our main purpose as an institution is to have students succeed at their educational goals and it is always inspiring to our faculty and staff to see these graduating students receive this recognition.” The NACC Chorus, led by Dr. Kathy Adkins, performed at the ceremony, as did a musical group led by Dr. Dan Knox. Dr. Joe Burke, Mr. Mike Kennamer, Dean Marilyn Reece, and President Campbell presented the diplomas to the graduates. Mrs. Angie Stewart, Administrative Assistant to the Vice President/Dean of Instruction, certified students’ graduation requirements and designated those to be recognized for honors.

Campbell also acknowledged the Graduation Committee, which made arrangements for the ceremony. Committee members are: Ms. Susan Barron, chair; Mrs. Angie Stewart; Mrs. Holly Williams; Mrs. Carolyn Jones; Dr. Dan Knox; Dr. Kathy Adkins; Ms. Andrea Wheeler; Mr. Kent Jones; and Mrs. Julise Clement.
