NACC Opens New Student and Faculty Technology Learning Center

As part of a US Department of Education Title III Strengthening Institutions Program grant, Northeast Alabama Community College is pleased to announce the opening of the Student and Faculty Technology Learning Center located in the Business Education Building Room 107. The Center offers training in instructional technologies as well as serves as a technology testing center for certifications such as Microsoft and IC3.

The center is an official testing site for the new Microsoft Elevate America program. Microsoft is providing 1 million vouchers to states for no-cost access to Microsoft E-Learning courses and select Microsoft Business Certification exams. Vouchers are available in the Workforce development office, and practice testing and certification testing will be offered in the Learning Center on the NACC campus.

“We are very pleased with the opening of this Center,” said NACC President Dr. David Campbell. “We have over the past several years made substantial investments into educational technology and now consider the college in the front lines when it comes to these new instructional methods. Our goal now is to make certain that all our faculty and staff acquire the knowledge they need to apply this technology. Mrs. Lea will be providing this instruction to them through the Student and Faculty Technology Learning Center.” Judith Lea serves as the Director of the Center.

The college is characterized by the access to educational technology that already is provided. There are more than twenty computer labs on campus, and approximately 650 personal computers. The college is totally wireless and provides a Web cam that sends out real-time images of the Quadrangle area world-wide. The Wimba software system permits faculty members to record lectures and students may replay these recordings on or off campus. Blackboard software provides support for online courses, as well as applications for classroom instruction. Electronic smart boards, projectors and computers provide classroom instructional support for any Instructor who requests them. The college also is served by a Teleconference Center and mobile teleconference units.

“The Student and Faculty Technology Learning Center will permit us to get the most from the educational technology that we have on campus,” Campbell stated. “This is the next logical step after having acquired this educational technology.” Campbell noted that Dr. Joe Burke serves as the coordinator of the federal grant, which was obtained based on the submission from an NACC Committee which he chaired.

As a part of the grant, the Center also has a blog (www.nacctlc.blogspot.com) where anyone can check technology news and a schedule of upcoming training sessions.
