Submission Instructions for Aurora
for High School Students
Aurora, the literary and art magazine of Northeast
Alabama Community College, will publish original works written by
selected junior high and high school students. Three winners will be
selected by the local middle and high school English faculty for the
following categories and divisions:
Poetry: Grades 7-9, Grades 10-12
Fiction: Grades 7-9, Grades 10-12
Essay*: Grades 7-9, Grades 10-12
*For the purposes of this contest, “Essay” is defined as
an original non-fiction work whose ideas and expressions are primarily
those of the author. Research papers that primarily compile the ideas
and studies of others are not suitable for this contest.
Directions for Submissions
• All contest entries must be written by a student
currently enrolled at a middle or high school in the Northeast service
area.
• Contributions must be typed, double-spaced on 8.5 by
11-inch paper, and should not exceed 5,000 words. Do not use onionskin
paper or italic “script” typefaces. In addition to the printed form, all
winning entries must be submitted on a CD, using Microsoft Word or
formatted in rich text.
• Contributors must not identify themselves in any way on
any page of text submitted (for each separate entry).
• A waiver form must be signed, dated, and submitted with
each entry.
• The following information must appear on a cover sheet
for each piece submitted:
ü Contributor’s name
ü School address
ü School telephone number
ü English teacher’s name
ü E-mail address (if applicable)
ü Title and category of work(s) submitted
ü Biographical statement (written in the
third person): 1-3 sentences about the
contributor and his or her submissions
