Tools for Analyzing Sentences

Step 1    Find the verb

Step 2    Ask Who or What to find the subject

Step 3    Decide if verb is active or not

Step 4    If active verb, test for Direct Object by asking (Is there a receiver of the action?)

Step 5    If not active verb (linking), test for Subject Clause (A word which renames or describes the subject?)

Step 6    Test for Indirect Object by asking To or For Whom (indirect objects come before direct object)
