"Teaching is the only way to actually return to the
real pleasures
and excitement of the college atmosphere."
After graduating from D.A.R. High School in Grant, Larry
attended Northeast Alabama Community College where he
received an Associate Degree. He transferred to Jacksonville State University. It
was there that he decided he wanted to major in English and
to become an English teacher. He also attributes his desire
to read and to become an English teacher to his high school
teacher, Mr. Herb Weeks.
After graduating from JSU, he began teaching in Stevenson,
Alabama. While teaching in Stevenson, he returned to
school at JSU and earned a Master of Arts Degree in English.
He later returned to teaching and taught for several years
at International Career Institute in Huntsville. Also, he
opened a business and has been self-employed for several
years.
Larry is married to Rachel Walker, who is also an instructor
at NACC, and they have two children. He said, “I really
enjoy teaching at NACC; I look forward to every class; it’s
really too much fun to call it a job.” He also stated that
the first few semesters were a real shock: “I kept thinking
how lucky I must be to have all the good students in my
classes. Now I realize that all of the students here are
really quality people, and it is a pleasure to be associated
with them.” Larry said that not a day goes by in which he
doesn’t get a really good laugh from some remark from a
student. For instance, he said, “Like the day we were
reading a story in class dealing with depression, and I
asked if any of the students had ever been depressed. One
student spoke up and said, ‘Well, not since I started
drinking.’ I think that was a joke because all of us got a
good laugh.” |
