Technical Requirements
for blackboard

• A Pentium-class or Mac computer with at least 1 GB RAM
• An Internet Service Provider (ISP) that provides a broadband connection
• Internet Explorer 9+, Firefox 4.0+, and Safari 4.0+
• Word Processing software (Microsoft Word is the college standard.)
• Additional software may be required for individual classes. This may include presentation graphics (PowerPoint), spreadsheet (Excel), and/or special software (programming, drafting, project management, etc.).
• Class materials may require a special version of software. The class materials may refer to specific details of operation such as menus, toolbars, and keyboard shortcuts that may not be the same in a different version of the software.
• Multimedia is required in some courses.

Release 9.1 SP10 Supported Browsers & Operating Systems:
The recommended browser for Blackboard 9.1, SP10 is Firefox.
Internet Explorer 7 and Firefox 3.6 are no longer supported.

• The following technologies are not supported
1. Internet Explorer 6, 7
2. Firefox 1.5, 2.0, 3.0, 3.5 and 3.6
3. Safari 2.0, 3.x (or any version on Windows)
4. Windows XP 64-bit (unlisted)
5. Mac OS X 10.3, OS X 10.4, OS X 10.5
6. JRE 5

• Internet Explorer 8 is only supported in Standards Mode.

• Internet Explorer 9 is only supported in Standards Mode.

• Blackboard strives to make all its products as accessible as possible. JAWS 13 and 14 were used during accessibility testing of 9.1 SP13.

• Chrome support: Due to the auto-update feature of Chrome, support is based on the version available at the time of testing. 9.1 SP13 was tested with Chrome 26.0.x.

• Firefox support: Due to the auto-update feature of Firefox, support is based on the version available at the time of testing. 9.1 SP13 was tested with Firefox versions 20.0.x and 17.0.x (ESR).
 

Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee optimal performance since background tasks or programs (i.e. antivirus software) may be using necessary memory.

 

Additional information regarding technical requirements is listed below.

  • Popup blockers should be turned off before accessing Blackboard.

  • Check for the latest version of JAVA.

  • Some courses may require that one or more of the following plug-in application programs be downloaded. Each course should specify which programs are required.

    • Adobe Reader

    • Apple QuickTime

    • Adobe Flash Player

    • Microsoft Windows Media Player

    • Windows Media Player Plugin for Firefox browsers

    • Windows Media Player Plugin for Macs (Flip4Mac)

    • RealNetworks RealOne Player

    These plug-in application programs are free downloads from the vendors. Generally, plug-in software is present on newly purchased computers.

Computers with these components are available for student usage in the NACC library or a campus computer lab. (Hours and computer availability vary; students should check with individual labs.)

Remember, problems with your computer at home are not an acceptable excuse for failing to complete class assignments. Make use of the computers on campus if you have problems with your computer at home!
