Frequently Asked Questions
What is an online course?
An online course is designed to bring the equivalent features of
a traditional classroom to students through distance education.
Each course is web based, allowing students to complete
coursework off campus. Online classes are maintained through
Blackboard™. This platform serves as a virtual classroom where
students have access to discussion boards, assignments, tests,
and more.
How do I access my online class?
During orientation the instructor gives details regarding
student user names and passwords. On the first day of class,
students sign on to Blackboard™ to access course instructions,
assignments, and other information.
Will I need a Northeast e-mail account to take an online
course?
Yes. After registering for an online class, you must e-mail the
instructor by the first day of class, using your college e-mail
account. Please visit E-mail Instructions to learn how to access
your e-mail account through NOAH (Northeast Online Access Host).
Must I attend the orientation session for my online course?
Yes. Orientation for an online course is required. During an
orientation session, students will receive important information
regarding the course software, assignments, tests, grading, etc.
Some instructors conduct an online orientation session within
Blackboard™.
Instructors who require on-campus orientation offer a choice of
times. If you encounter an unavoidable conflict with the
scheduled orientation, contact your instructor or Judith Lea in
the Office of Educational Technology Support (Email:
leaj@nacc.edu; Phone:
256.638.4418 or 256.228.6001, ext. 309) as soon as possible.
Will I need a textbook?
Most online courses require a textbook. Books are available for
purchase at Textbooks, Etc., the NACC bookstore.
You also may be required to download and print materials related
to your online course.
What if I don’t own a computer?
Computers are available for student use on campus Monday-Friday
(Monday-Thursday evenings) in the Learning Resources Center and
in room 211 of the Pendley Administration Building.
Do online students have Northeast e-mail accounts as well?
Yes. You can go here to read more: E-Mail Instructions.
What are the technical/software requirements for online
courses?
For the specific technical requirements, please visit the
Technical Requirements webpage.
The software requirements for completing assignments vary from
course to course. Instructors will include this information
during orientation sessions.
Will I ever be required to meet on campus?
Some online courses require on-campus attendance at an
orientation session during the first week of class. If you
encounter an unavoidable conflict with the scheduled
orientation, contact your instructor or Judith Lea in the Office
of Educational Technology Support (Email:
leaj@nacc.edu; Phone:
256.638.4418 or 256.228.6001, ext. 309) as soon as possible.
You also will be required to come to campus for at least one
exam or other assigned activity. Online faculty will give
instruction at orientation regarding campus attendance for exams
and/or other activities. Students unable to travel to campus may
have the option of working under the supervision of an approved
proctor (see Distance Education Policy and Distance Education
Proctor Agreement).
May I use the college library even if I'm not taking any
classes on campus?

of the type of course delivery.
