Welcome to this Learning Adventure!

If you are an English Second Language (ESL) teacher on a shoestring budget who wants to bring more practical listening practice to your students, this site can help you.

What is a Real Life Language Learning Activity Anyway?

This project deals with developing Real-Life Language Learning Activities (ReLLLAs) for adult English as a second language (ESL) students.  This unit will involve the creation and use of ReLLLAs, which can be described as an audio segment of some real-life situation that is applicable to an individual student.  It could also be a short article or an interesting story.  It is chosen or created by the teacher and is introduced in class.  The adult ESL student will listen to this at home in a regular CD player and will have some related task to perform.  Teacher will follow-up on this assignment in the following class.  An additional benefit of this unit is the ability to include the teaching of local dialect and expressions in the language learning activities.

What should I do next?

For Individual Study -
First, download and print the Self-Study Task Chart.  Adobe PDF icon  (If you don't have Word® or Adobe Reader®, click here).  Then go to Project Overview and get started.  If you do not wish to fill out the task chart, go directly to the tutorial and work your way through the entire program.  It will take you to the above links in a recommended order, you just won't have an easy way of keeping track of your progress.

For Group Workshops - If you are interested in using this site to facilitate a workshop and guide other teachers in the complete process of creating and using Real Life Language Learning Activities (ReLLLAs), go to the User's Guide first.  (If you don't have Word® or Adobe Reader®, click here)

For Review and Refresher - If you have already taken the course, either in a face-to-face workshop or via this online instruction, feel free to browse the collection, visit the links to discover some new ones, skim through the tutorial to find some job aids, or share this site with a colleague.

I am delighted that you are here and hope your experience is an enriching one.  Feel free to contact me with any questions or comments.
