The Northeast Alabama Community College' Quiz Team went
undefeated and took first place at the Snead State
Community College Tournament on Friday, November 14.
Sixteen community college teams competed in the
tournament, including Northeast's White Team, Gadsden
State Community College, Bevill State Community College
(Jasper and Fayette), Snead State Community College,
Jefferson State Community College and Copiah-Lincoln
Community College (located in Southern Mississippi).
Tyler Hughes, Cord Pack, Jake Hicks and Casey Lowery
competed as the Northeast Blue Team. They defeated
traditional quiz team powerhouses such as Faulkner State
Community College (a former national community college
champion), Snead State Community College (former Alabama
community college champion) and Northwest Shoals
Community College.
In
the final round, undefeated Northeast defeated
undefeated Bevill Jasper by a score of 395 to 240.
Casey Lowery placed second out of approximately 65 other
competitors for his individual performance and was
awarded a trophy. In one round of the playoffs, Casey
scored 140 points by himself, a personal best for Casey.
Cord Pack, Jake Hicks and Garrett Monroe all finished
among the top 20 individual players.
In her first college quiz team performance, April Ivey
of Rainsville played with a spoiler team, a collection
of extra quiz team competitors from the various colleges
to create an even number of teams for tournament play.
Although spoiler teams typically are not expected to
perform well, April lead her team as its captain to a
top-five performance in its division.
After four tournaments so far this year, the Northeast
Blue team has won two first-place trophies and one third
place trophy. Casey Lowery has won two individual
trophies. The team's next tournament will be at Wallace
State Community College on December 5.
The Northeast Quiz Team co-sponsors are Denise
Patterson, Kevin Holt and Daphne Huntley. The
co-sponsors and the Quiz Team extend sincere thanks to
the entire Northeast family for its unfailing
encouragement and support.
